Guest Post: The Earl's Enticement by Collette Cameron

It is with great pleasure that I welcome the talented Collette Cameron back to Leatherbound Reviews. I was fortunate enough to host Collette for the releases of Highlander's Hope and The Viscount's Vow. I want to say that if you have yet to read one of Collette's books, you are missing out. I found myself not wanting to put down either book as I read them and am eager to get my hands on The Earl's Enticement.
Talk about *hot* Scottish men! Major swoons for Ewan and Ian.
Without further ado, let's see what The Earl's Enticement holds in store for its readers.

********
THE EARL’S ENTICEMENT
She won’t be tamed.
A fiery, unconventional Scot, Adaira Ferguson wears breeches, swears, and has no more desire to marry than she does to follow society’s dictates of appropriate behavior. She trusts no man with the secret she desperately protects.

He can’t forget.
Haunted by his past, Roark, The Earl of Clarendon, rigidly adheres to propriety, holding himself and those around him to the highest standards, no matter the cost. Betrayed once, he’s guarded and leery of all women.

Mistaking Roark for a known spy, Adaira imprisons him. Infuriated, he vows vengeance. Realizing her error, she’s appalled and releases him, but he’s not satisfied with his freedom. Roark is determined to transform Adaira from an ill-mannered hoyden to a lady of refinement.
He succeeds only to discover, he preferred the free-spirited Scottish lass who first captured his heart.

I’m not sure which whether it was my love for Regency, Scottish/Highlanders, or castles that gave me the urge to write the Castle Brides Series.

Well, that’s not entirely true. I had written Highlander’s Hope, which despite its title, is really a Regency-Scottish historical, and I wanted a castle on the front cover. After all, Ewan and Yvette find love, at last, at Craiglocky Castle. (I made the name up just because we author’s get to do that. J)

I always knew Highlander’s Hope would develop into a series  . . . or two. You know, I had to do something with all those characters I dared to introduce in the book. I might add they gave some reviewers fits.  *Snort.*

But, since I like reading books with large casts of characters, as long as I can keep track of who’s who, I did what I wanted in my book. We authors get to do that, too! Ah, the power.

By-the-way, in hindsight, I wish I’d titled the book, The Highlander’s Heiress. But since I didn’t, I’m using that title for another story which will be part of a Viking/ highlander anthology releasing from Soul Mate Publishing late this year or early next year.

Okay, back to the whole castle business.

When I wrote Vangie and Ian’s story in The Viscount’s Vow, naturally he had to have a magnificent estate and an enormous manor house with turrets. I had to have those turrets you know, because the south tower is where Vangie’s off-her-rocker mother-in-law has Vangie locked up. Somersfield is also where Yvette takes refuge when she flees London in Highlander’s Hope.

Once again, a castle appeared on the front cover of the book. So, it was only natural to have another castle on The Earl’s Enticement. A great deal of that story takes place in Craiglocky’s dungeon.
For those of you who read Highlander’s Hope, you’ll remember Roark and Adaira. Well, The Earl’s Enticement is their story, and trust me, when I tell you, all kinds of stuff happens both in and out of the keep’s dungeon.

Once the third book was done, I had this “duh” moment. I had no series title. No, I really didn’t.

All along I’d known the books were going to be a three-book series, but did I come up with a title? Nope. I ran a couple ideas by my fabulous Regency critique group and then asked what they thought of the Castle Brides Series. They gave me the thumbs up, and I passed the information along to my wonderful publisher.

The cover of The Earl’s Enticement you see here today, does not have the series title or cover quote on it yet. They are, however, on the cover that is released. And lest you, dear readers, be worried that some of the other characters you met and fell in love with in previous books should be left out ... fear not!

I’ve started a new six book series, The Highland Heather Romancing a Scot Series, and I promise you’ll be seeing much more of your favorite people from the Castle Brides series.

EXCERPT

Adaira punched the pillow in her lap. Legs crossed, she sat in the middle of her bed.
“I won’t do it. I won’t. They cannot make me. I’ll run away to Tante Floressa’s. She’s invited me to visit her many times over the past two years.”

Never mind the French Wars had prevented any such thing. Tante Floressa was somewhat of a flibbertigibbet. The one time Adaira had visited France, her aunt nearly swooned when she spied freckles on Adaira’s nose. She hadn’t even been six yet.

Wonder what she’d make of my breeches?

A momentary smile hitched the corners of Adaira’s mouth before shifting into a scowl. There would be no more breeches.

She punched the pillow twice more with sharp hard blows, pretending it was the Earl of Clarendon’s smug face. “I’m glad I hit him,” she muttered.

“Wish I’d hit him harder. Wish I’d broken that perfect, straight, arrogant nose of his.”
Whap. She slugged the pillow again, this time hard enough, it flew across the room. The cushion bounced off an armchair before tumbling to the floor. She knew she sounded like a petulant child, and was acting like one too. She didn’t care. She hugged another small pillow to her chest.

Father had confiscated her riding crop after his lordship squawked she’d attacked him in the crofter’s cottage. She hadn’t meant to strike Lord Clarendon with the weapon, and the earl knew it. Now, how was she to protect herself? She supposed she’d have to start toting a dagger sheathed to her thigh like Yvette’s Romani cousin, Lady Warrick.

Wouldn’t that put the earl in a dither?

The punishment Adaira’s parents levied on her, dictated by the earl, of course, was far too harsh for her crimes. He’d not been seriously injured. His detainment hadn’t been torturous or lengthy. Yet, the sentences imposed on her were both of the latter. A year at Miss Hortensia Doddington’s Finishing School or a Season in London.

Adaira had to choose.

Three months of torture or nine?

Hell or Hades?

Review: The Viscount's Vow by Collette Cameron

Today I get to take part in ABG Reads Book Tour with my review for The Viscount's Vow by Collette Cameron. It is a pleasure to be a part of this tour. You can also read Ms. Cameron's guest post for Leatherbound Reviews here.

Review:
Vengeance isn’t sweet, but what if it can take one on an unexpected journey?

Determined to avenge his brother’s and father’s deaths, Lord Ian Warrick sets for London with one purpose: ruin the light skirt whose actions lead to their deaths. All is going according to plan, until Evangeline Caruthers, said light skirt, needs help. Found in a most compromising, though innocent, position, there is only one solution to squelch the wagging tongues: marriage. How will Lord Warrick survive a forced marriage to the very lady whom he was set on destroying?

With her striking Roma beauty and her simple ways, Vangie Caruthers doesn’t quite fit in amongst the haut ton. Following her Roma herritage, Vangie is determined to marry for love or not at all. However, those plans are dashed when she is forced to marry Lord Warrick, a complete stranger. In true Roma fashion, Vangie is intent on making the best of this undesirable situation. But when she discovers the real reasons behind Ian’s presence in London and his speculation behind his brother’s death, will she be able to trust this man she married?

After a rocky beginning, Ian vows he will not hurt Vangie again, but as trouble and adversity abound, will Ian be able to keep his word? Cameron combines just enough angst and misunderstandings with romance and speculation, leading me to read this book in just two sittings; I simply had to know how the conflicts were resolved. And there is where the book fell short for me.

After the excellent ride Cameron took me on, I was disappointed when the resolution came to such a quick and convenient closure. I would have liked to have seen that last scene of the climax played out more. The resolution was just too sudden for me.

The only other issue I had with the book is Vangie’s frequent use of “faith.” Good portions of her sentences begin with “faith.” “Faith, he is even handsomer up close.” “Faith, whatever is going on?” “Faith, she’d become mistrustful.” While I found this repetitious, it might not bother other readers.

I have never before read a book with Gypsies in it. Learning about their culture and ways was rather interesting. Colette Cameron’s research in to the Roma culture is evident as she cleverly weaves their ways into the Regency period. I now have a great desire to see the Romani people first hand and get a glimpse at their easy-going lifestyle.

If you are looking for a Regency read with romance and a bit of suspense, I suggest trying The Viscount’s Vow.

From the publisher:
Amidst murder and betrayal, destiny and hearts collide when scandal forces a nobleman and a gypsy to marry in this Regency Romance.

Half Romani, half English noblewoman, Evangeline Caruthers is the last woman in England Ian Hamilton, the Viscount Warrick, could ever love—an immoral wanton responsible for his brother’s and father’s deaths. She thinks he’s a foul-tempered blackguard, who after setting out to cause her downfall, finds himself forced to marry her—snared in the trap of his own making.

When Vangie learns the marriage ceremony itself may have been a ruse, she flees to her gypsy relatives, declaring herself divorced from Ian under Romani law. He pursues her to the gypsy encampment, and when the handsome gypsy king offers to take Ian’s place in Vangie’s bed, jealousy stirs hot and dangerous.

At last, under a balmy starlit sky, Ian and Vangie breech the chasm separating them. Peril lurks though. Ian’s the last in his line, and his stepmother intends to dispose of the newlyweds so her daughter can inherit his estate. Only by trusting each other can they overcome scandal and murderous betrayal.

The Viscount's Vow Guest Post by Collette Cameron + Giveaway!

Talented author Collette Cameron stops by Leatherbound Reviews today to talk about her latest release, The Viscount's Vow, gypsies, and gives readers a wonderful excerpt! Plus, Collette is offering an ebook for giveaway! Now, please join me in welcoming Collette back to Leatherbound Reviews!

A Gypsy Noblewoman

The heroine in The Viscount’s Vow, Evangeline (Vangie) Caruthers, is a bit unusual for a Regency romance.  Though she’s the daughter of a baronet, she’s also part Romani; a gypsy princess in fact.

I thought I’d share some of the interesting Romani culture tidbits I came across while doing my research. These were true in 1814, the year The Viscount’s Vow is set in.

First,  all Roma—that’s how they refer to themselves—have a Gadžo name, their Christian name, and a Roma name. Vangie’s Roma name is Zora. Gypsies  vistas, or clans are ruled by a bandolier, who deals with the day-to-day issues that might come up. This person is chosen because of their maturity and wisdom. He is not the gypsy king.

I found contrasting information about divorce. Some sources claimed it was complex because of the bride price paid before the marriage. Others said that within the gypsy culture, if a woman leaves her husband, she’s divorced him and is free to marry another.  I used this aspect in The Viscount’s Vow because no bride price was paid for Vangie, so the point was mute. Purity before marriage was strictly adhered to, which is in direct contrast to how the travelers, especially the women have been portrayed historically.

I was astounded to learn the rigorous customs the Roma adhere to regarding ceremonial cleanliness or pollution.  For instance, they wouldn’t use a handkerchief  because it’s unclean, and they were supposed to only wash in running water.  Vangie has been raised as an English noblewoman who spends time with her Romani clan, so she does take baths. Part of her internal conflict is a result of the clash between her English and Roma heritage.

Ian is accepted as a gaje, a Gypsy Friend, which essentially makes him an honorary Gypsy, and he is entitled to the hospitality and protection of the clan. It’s a good thing too, because he has an extended visit with the Roma after Vangie leaves him.

Gypsies are a blood family, and the only way for a gawdji (a non-gypsy) to become part of the family is to either be sponsored by a member of the clan, or travel with the gypsies for a time. Then the vista votes whether to accept the gawdji into the tribe. If a vote of consent is passed, an initiation ceremony must be undergone. Ian doesn’t ever go to this extent, because his time with the Roma is temporary.

One custom I found extremely fascinating is that when a gypsy woman is pregnant, she is cared for by the other women of the clan, and dear hubby takes over all her duties. There’s so  much more I could share about these fascinating people, who were continually shunned and persecuted, but the final bit that honestly surprised me the most, was how many of the Roma tribes were devout Christians.

So there you are; a brief introduction to Romani culture and customs.  You’ll find many more references to gypsy foods, dress, language, and laws in The Viscount’s Vow.

The Viscount’s Vow – Gypsy Vardo Scene

Ian placed a hand on Vangie’s shoulder. “I’m so very sorry.”
Oh, how she needed a comforting touch. But not his. Never again his.
She wrenched away from him.
Her voice ringing with scathing condemnation, she said, “Tell me, Lord Warrick, are you terribly disappointed I’ll not have a distended belly proclaiming to the world I carry your seed before you discard me?”
Vangie heard him suck in a great gulp of air.
“She was lying, Vangie.”
She clamped a hand over her mouth to stifle the sobs demanding release.
Was she? Or was Lucinda telling the truth, and Ian the liar?
When she didn’t respond he pressed, “Lucinda knew you were behind me. Her lies were contrived to cause you pain and grief.”
He laid a hand on her shoulder. “We’re legally married. By all that is holy, I swear it.”
What did he know of holiness?
Vangie struggled to turn over, the weight of the quilt covering her adding to the burden of her grief. She pinned him with a direct look.
“Tell me one thing,” she rasped. “Did you or did you not venture to London for the express purpose of causing my downfall?”
“Vangie. . .”
“Perhaps downfall isn’t accurate. Putting me in my place? Giving me my just due? Ruining me?”
He said nothing. Had guilt rendered him speechless? She searched his face. His handsome features were etched with sorrow, and his eyes . . . was that regret? Or . . . could it be? Were those tears awash in the silvery depths?
Her heart twisted painfully. Blast and damn. No. She’d not feel compassion for him. She was the victim. She would offer him no quarter, no mercy.
“Well, did you?”
“That was before I. . .”
Pain, razor-sharp pierced her heart and left it bleeding. “It’s a simple question, Ian. Yes or no?”
“It’s not that simple—”
With a doggedness that surprised even her, Vangie persisted. “Yes or no?”
“Sweeting, I’d been told. . .”
Told? Fury whipped anew. She bit out, “Yes. Or. No?”
Absolute, resolute, demanding truth’s validation, either to mend her shattered heart or annihilate it completely, Vangie would have her answer. No more a corked-brained, beguiled miss, blinded by love. Looking through the twin lenses of betrayal and deceit, she could at last see Ian clearly.
His eyes pleaded with her to understand. His voice low and filled with self-condemnation, he uttered but one syllable.
“Yes.”
