Interview for The Temptation of Lady Serena by Ella Quinn + GIVEAWAY!

I am so excited to have Ella Quinn with me today! I have had the pleasure of interviewing her for each of her other books in her Marriage Game series. You can read my interview for The Seduction of Lady Phoebe HERE and my interview for The Secret Life of Anna Marsh HERE
Join me in welcoming Ella back to Leatherbound Reviews as she talks about her upcoming release and third book in The Marriage Game series, The Temptation of Lady Serena

How do you decide on your characters’ names? Pick them out of a hat? Whatever sounds good? Or is it a carefully thought-out process?

Generally they introduce themselves to me, at least the major characters do. If I need help I have a book of British surnames, and another one of period first names. Then I flip open the book to a page and a name will pop out at me.

Tell us a little about your main characters, Lady Serena Weir and Viscount Beaumont. What’s their relationship like?

Lady Serena has lived a quite life in the Scottish Boarders region. She’s been responsible for her family’s castle estate since she was young, but has never been in wider society, nevertheless the ton. Robert was hurt badly early on, that added to that his parent’s bad marriage caused him to keep his affairs to a few weeks duration.

Robert is immediately struck by Serena, but since she’s one of his best friend’s cousin, is at a loss as to what to do. Serena is a little overwhelmed by her coming out. She knows she needs to find a husband and is drawn to him, but has no experience with men.  Although they begin go become close, Robert decides to take the easy way to get Serena to marry him, but doesn’t take into consideration the fallout from that.

Your covers are all so beautiful. Do you have much say in the matter of designing them? I know some publishers allow more input from the author than others.

Absolutely none. I do give descriptions of my characters, but other than that, it’s all my publisher.

You have one more book planned for your Marriage Game series, correct? What’s next after this series?

There are actually seven books in the series. Book four has now been contracted and will release in April. I just finished book #5, and started the next one. I’ve already written the first two books of the next series. They deal with a younger group of heroes and heroines. The foundation family has ten children, then, of course, we have to add their friends. The series is tentatively called Love in a Season.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

Seeing the story unfold. In chapter two of the one I’m working on now, I had a vicar just show up.

Now having several published books under your belt, what advice would you give aspiring writers? I like asking this question of my guests as I know several of my readers are aspiring authors.

Well, the first book doesn’t actually release until September 19th, but I’d say have a plan for your books. When I wrote The Seduction of Lady Phoebe, I knew there would be related books. Though it wasn’t very organized. Lady Serena was actually the second book I wrote, but the third in the series.

Find a good agent. I have to say, I love mine. I would never have gotten a three book contract with them release so close together if it hadn’t been for her.

Aim high. I turned down offers from small publishers because I really wanted to be published by NY.

Build your media platform. Publishers will look at it. It doesn’t matter if you’re blogging, tweeting, or on Facebook, or whatever, just get yourself out there.

Be nice and be professional. Publishing is like a small town. Everyone knows everyone else, and agents and editors have memories like elephants. Don’t say anything you wouldn’t want the whole world to know.

Never give up. The only difference between an unpublished author and a published one is persistence.

Thanks so much, Ella. As always, it is truly a pleasure having you at Leatherbound Reviews. I wish you as much success with The Temptation of Lady Serena as you have had with the first two books in The Marriage Game series.

Thank you so much for having me, Jakki. I love visiting you!

From the Publisher:

Ella Quinn’s bachelors in The Marriage Game series are charming and cunning when it comes to the
ways of love—until the right woman captures their unsuspecting hearts…

Custom-made gowns…nights at the theater…and a host of eligible bachelors. Accustomed to living a quiet life in the Scottish Borderlands, Lady Serena Weir has never had any of these luxuries. But when Serena’s brother demands she finally have a Season in London, she’s thrust into a glamorous world she’s only dreamed of…

Robert, Viscount Beaumont remembers all too well what it feels like to be in love. That is why he must keep his distance from Serena. He’s only felt his pulse stir the way it does now when he made the mistake of loving the wrong woman once before. Yet the more he strives to resist his feelings, the nearer he is to falling under Serena’s seductive spell…

A Summer in Europe Vlog

In A Summer in Europe, Gwendolyn Reese is gifted a five-week tour of Europe with her aunt’s Sudoku & Mahjongg club. This sixty and older group reminds me of the golden-agers in Betty White's new television show, Off Their Rockers. Aunt Bea and friends really know how to have a good time and how to get the most out of life.

Here’s just a glimpse of what Gwen is in store for this summer, and of the liveliness of the S&M Club:

As you can see, Aunt Bea and her S&M club are a hoot! I found myself cracking up at their antics. They truly added to the enjoyment of A Summer in Europe.

Are you planning any trips this summer? If so, are you going to be in the company of your own Aunt Bea and company?
How do you want to be perceived or behave when you reach your golden years?

We do not do much during the summer as this is the demanding time for my husband’s job. However, we are going to try to get to the beach with our cousins for a few days, and the kids and I will be heading to Huntsville, AL to visit my husband’s aunt. Other than that, it will be a low key summer: pool, park, zoo, fountains, and any other free event!
I truly hope that as I age, I continue to enjoy life and make the most of it, just like Aunt Bea and her friends.

***GIVEAWAY TIME***

Review: A Summer in Europe by Marilyn Brant

“Gwennie,” Aunt Bea began, “we’ve got a little surprise for you.”
Her aunt shot a look at Connie Sue, who raised her eyebrows at Hester and who, in turn, nudged Zenia, who blurted out, “Angie’s havin’ a hip replacement.”
“I-I’m sorry to hear that,” Gwen replied...”
“What Zenia means, dear,” her aunt interrupted, “is that Angie and Thomas aren’t going to be taking the trip with the group… So, I bought their tickets and transferred them to our names,” her aunt said brightly. “We’re going on the trip instead.”
“Surprise!” the S&M club members cried in gleeful harmony.
Gwen’s heart paused, as if not sure whether it should keep beating. The anxiety at the prospect of undertaking such a journey with this nearly insane crew tangoed with the allure of her first foreign adventure. I could see a world I’ve only read about... (from A Summer in Europe p.22-24)

For her thirtieth birthday, Gwendolyn Reese doesn’t receive the expected engagement ring from her boyfriend. Instead, her aunt and the Sudoku and Mahjongg Club present Gwen with a grand tour of Europe. With no ring, Gwen decides to go abroad, her first step in finding herself. Having rarely left the comfort of the Midwest, and uncertain as to whether she is up to spending a summer with her aunt’s crazy friends, Gwen is apprehensive. Yet, it is somewhere between Capri and Sorrento that Gwen has her great awakening. Everything now is vivid, vibrant, and alive; she is alive.
Helping her along is physics professor Emerson Edwards. However, the more time Gwen spends in Emerson’s company, the greater her struggle becomes, as her new passion for culture is not the only awakening Gwen is having. Even though things may be platonic between the two, there’s no getting around the sparks flying from all the sexual tension. From feeding each other linguini and chocolate cake to their unique understanding for each other, I was completely wrapped up in their story. But will Gwen’s renaissance take root enough for her to forget the safety and predictability of life back in Iowa with her boyfriend Richard or will she take a chance in her search for her own passions?
Adding to the amusement of the story was the S&M Club. It didn’t matter if Hester, Zenia and Aunt Bea were discussing The Bold and the Beautiful, which men are “fling-worthy,” or a new way to dispose of someone as a plot for a novel, they had me in stitches. I mean, who expects a sixty-seven year old aunt to encourage her niece to “lose” her hotel key so she will have no other choice than to spend the night elsewhere?
A Summer in Europe was truly an enjoyable novel. I found Brant’s storytelling supreme, her characters real, and Europe breathtaking. In addition to the lovable characters, it was the author’s picturesque language that had me experiencing Gwen’s awakening and Europe first hand. Brant’s ability to take the smallest details and tie them into the major themes and motifs, as well as her perfectly chosen descriptions, wove this story together like one of Zenia’s finely knitted scarves.
I was not ready to say good-bye to my new friends or to unpack my bags and put away my passport. In doing so, it would mean my summer in Europe was over, and while entertaining and introspective, A Summer in Europe was a journey I did not want to end.

*Wednesday I will be interviewing Marilyn Brant, who is generously GIVING AWAY a copy of A Summer in Europe!!

About the Author:
As a former teacher, library staff member, freelance magazine writer and national book reviewer, Marilyn has spent much of her life lost in literature. She’s been told — and not always with the intent to flatter — that she’s “insatiably curious” and “a travel addict.” Marilyn has traveled to 46 states and over 30 countries (so far — she’s not done yet!), but she now lives in the Chicago suburbs with her family. When she isn’t rereading Jane’s books or enjoying the latest releases by her writer friends, she’s working on her next novel, eating chocolate indiscriminately and hiding from the laundry.
