What's in a Name?

I am putting my paranormal/mystery month aside for a moment to focus on an important issue before me.

Some of you may know my husband and I are expecting our third child, due in February. (Which is why I’m looking a bit bigger in my vlogs, not because I’ve been eating too many Krispy Kreme donuts and Chick-fil-A, though both are super yummy).

You may be wondering, what does this have to do with book reviews? The answer is quite simple. Week after week I give you my thoughts and opinions on books I have read. As readers, you read my reviews and compare what I have to say against other reviews. You then take that information and filter it, comparing it against what you believe makes a good read, thus allowing you to make the decision whether or not that particular book is worth your time and money.

Today, I am turning the tables and asking for your advice, thoughts, suggestions, and opinions. We are in DESPERATE need for a name for baby #3. Naming the first two was easy. We currently have one of each, Luke (our boy) and Aubrey (our girl). Had baby #3 been a boy, we would have named him Jonathan. We like the name Jonathan because it means “gift of God,” and we truly feel this baby is a gift and blessing from God. Though I will not lie when I say Sir John Buford as well as the SoulFire leader, Jonathan, both came to mind with this name too. (See the connection to Austenesque literature)?

If you haven’t guessed, we are not having another boy; rather, we are having another girl. (Hooray for more hair bows and pretty dresses)! However, we are at a loss for a name.
Here are some we have tossed around, however, we are not sold on any name.
Samantha (kind of a namesake for my husband)
Lauren
Grace (though we may use Grace for the middle name)
Elliott/Ellie (spelled Elli to go with Jakki- thinking maybe Elli Grace)
Charley (possibly spelled Charlee. Again, kind of a namesake for my late father).

So that is where we are. We cannot decide on a name and are tired of calling this child “little sister,” “player to be named later,” “baby girl,” and “number 3.”

I am now asking you to give me your input. Do you have any name suggestions or thoughts on names mentioned in the comments section? Who knows, after hearing your suggestions, I may even start a poll in the sidebar of our top few choices and let you all vote on your choice!

Thanks so much and I look forward to hearing the names you picked out!

  1. Congrats! I think Elli Grace is cute, and Grace is my daughter's middle name. ;)

    1. Thanks, Anna! As of last night, DH was leaning more towards Elli Grace. I'm still quite undecided. Your daughter has a beautiful middle name! ;)

  2. Congrats on another precious girl! We love little girls over in our house!:) I love the name Grace, since as you know I have my own sweet Grace Elizabeth. And we can't forget my other little Emma Faith, but I always said if we had another little girl I wanted to name her Charlotte. I love that name! Again, congrats! I am so happy for you!!=))

    1. Thanks, Kelli! Ooh, I really like Grace Elizabeth! ;) Your daughters are so adorable too! I think Charlotte would go well with your other girls' names! That is our thing too. We want a name that goes well with Luke and Aubrey. Sam is thinking he wants an "E" ending name to go along with Aubrey. I am still as confused as I was 22 weeks ago! :)

  3. I do like Ellie Grace. How about Gracie Lauren? Or Lauren Grace and call her Gracie? I also like the name Rose, you could call her Rosie!

Congratulations!! I'm super excited for you!

    1. Hi Candy! If we decide on Grace, we will probably call her Gracie. Though I wonder if Grace is too popular? Oh, who would have thought naming a child could be so difficult! Not sure how you managed to name 5 if I can't even name 3. ;)

  4. I love your little girls first picture! It is so great that tecnology can do that! :)

Elli Grace is such a sweet name. Both short, but not too short. And I love that you have lot´s of names in the english speaking countries that are used in our daily conversations too, like Grace, Harmony, Melody, Faith. Very nice.

One of my two favourite girls names are Ruth and Esther, but with both I´m not sure how good they go for a baby :D. And then there´s Clara, of course, my goddaughters name, which I love. So I´ll have a very hard time deciding on a name, if I get the chance to become a mother.

With popularity - my mom thought Katrin was a name that not many choose. Well, there are quite a few Kathrins, Katrins, or Katharinas my age - so many mom´s and dad´s thought about that being a rare name.
If you wish to go with Grace, don´t let the popularity give the doubts too much weight!

    1. Katrin, we talked about Clara too. It is yet another name we have been tossing around. Funny, we mentioned Esther too! I love the story of Ruth and Naomi (one of my favs), though I don't think we will choose either name for our little one. Aubrey loves the story of Esther and has me read it to her all the time.
You do make a great point about parents thinking a name will be different, only to find out it actually became popular!
      Oh, so many choices.
      Enjoy that goddaughter! :)

  5. Hi Jakki, congratulations on your pregnancy :-) I have a son called Luke too. When we came to name our daughter we had two choices lined up, Isabel or Emily but we wanted to wait to meet her before we committed to it! My daughter is called Isabel Sophia. Your name choices are lovely, I particularly love the name Grace, you could call her Gracie as a pet name if you wanted a name ending in y/ie. Ellie is lovely too. If I had another daughter I'd like to call her Amelia Grace I think, but we have no plans for more. All the best with the rest of your pregnancy, hope you settle on a name you're happy with soon.

    1. Hi Ceri! Your daughter's name is beautiful! We have thought about calling her Gracie. Our original name was Scarlett Grace, possibly calling her Gracie, but again, we are not sold on any name. I have a feeling we will end up doing what you did and waiting until we meet her to decide. Amelia Grace is pretty too. We really weren't planning on having a third and here we are! :) Thanks so much for your comments and help, we really appreciate it, Ceri! :)

  6. I love the sonogram picture. It looks like she has her fist in the air - she's gonna be a fighter! (Or maybe not, my eyesight isn't that great lol).

I seem to have a thing for girls' names ending in "a": Olivia, Helena, Eliana (easily shortened to Elli), and Natasha come to mind. I do like Grace, and Charlotte (which could be "Charlee" but with your last name would be a really long name to learn to spell lol).

    1. We briefly thought about Ella. That is one concern of mine, with our last name, do we really want her to have a long first name? But then again, you never know what married name she will get. It might be a short last name like Darcy!

  7. I like Elle (beautiful) and El (face of God). Alexandria is a protector name, and it would be cute shortened to Alex, Alexi, or Alexa. We like nicknames at our house. Melanie (dark) became Mel or Melly. Amanda (beloved) became Mandy.

I also like Faith and Hope. When you hear the right name, it will just "fit."

Lauren was one of my choices for Melanie.

    1. Thanks, Robin! We are big on nicknames in our house too. Aubrey has become Aubs and poor Luke has become Lukie (not sure how much longer he will let me call him that) ;)
That's what I keep telling myself, that when we hear the name, it will just "fit." *Sigh* But I want this child to know how loved she is and want to be able to call her a name. But, it will come...eventually! :)

  8. My daughter is Eleanor (Ellie) Grace! :-)

I also think Natalie goes with your other kids' names.

Have you tried Nymbler? you can put in the older siblings names and it will give you "similar" names!

Good luck! This is the best/worst part about having kids :-)

    1. Hey Nic! I like Natalie, but the kids have a cousin down here named that. I will go to Nymbler later. I have not heard of it. I am open to anything for help. Thanks! Sam is a big fan of Elliott (Elli) Grace, I am just afraid to commit to anything yet because I feel there might be something better and more special out there. This is the toughest part of my pregnancy so far! :)

  9. In jest: Buckeye Wait-For-It Leatherberry
Truth, but a little out there: Scarlet (state flower of OH)

I'm fond of Margaret/Maggie these days. Love Maggie Smith on Downton!

    1. Angie! I think you just made my husband's day! Scarlet Grace was our first choice for a girl's name. It is still on the table, but we just fear that whenever we are able to move back that too many girls might have that name. Though the Barney Stinson "Wait-For-It" reference is great! Who knows, me might still decide on Scarlet. I love that you thought of it too, though!

  10. Here's my two cents:
You know I love Grace, as that is Madeline's middle name. :)
What about Lizzy, Janie, Elinor (Elli)? There are also other cute nicknames for Elizabeth, like Libby and Betsy.
    :)

    2. I like them all! It is just a shame I cannot settle on anything! Oh to go with Darcie though! ;)
