The Three Colonels Vlog with Colonel Buford

There are many things I love about Austenesque literature (watch Why Jane Austen vlog to find out more) from the romance, to my wonderings of how Elizabeth and Darcy will overcome their obstacles in this variation, to my anticipation over Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth finding each other after all of these years, my curiosity in how Caroline Bingley will be portrayed, and even which new characters will appear. I quite enjoy it when authors incorporate original characters into their work. I never know how the new character is going to throw a wrench in things. This unknown helps keeps my interest.
An original character I just love is Colonel Sir John Buford from Jack Caldwell’s The Three Colonels. He is dashing, brave, intelligent, and even somewhat of a reformed rake! Combine all of those things and you get one alluring original character.
Listen to this excerpt from The Three Colonels to get just a small glimpse of Colonel Buford.

Other original characters I love are archangels Michael & Gabriel from Robin Helm’s Guardian Trilogy, Hussein from Compulsively Mr. Darcy by Nina Benneton, All three men (Mr. Basford, Mr. Card, & Mr. Rushton) from Jennifer Becton’s works, and Mr. & Mrs. Joseph from Christmas at Pemberley by Regina Jeffers. And even though these are not variations, they are Austen-inspired: Sam Elliot from According to Jane by Marilyn Brant, and last, but certainly not least… wait for it… Alyssa Goodnight’s infamous kilt-wearing Sean MacInnes from Austentatious!!
I could go on and on, but I want to know, who are some of your favorite original characters from Austenesque novels?

  1. I'm flushing right along with Caroline! *sigh* What a man! Great question! Maybe something we should bring up in one of the AE discussions? I love everyone you already mentioned! Must find some different ones...ah! Admiral Patrick McGillvary from the Mercy's Embrace series, Dyfed Brougham from Pamela Aidan's series, and Aunt Augusta from Mr. Darcy's Obsession.

I love it when authors introduce their own creations, since many of them use/borrow ones created by Jane Austen, when they create their own, it makes their story more theirs, if that makes sense...

    1. Meredith, I love Dyfed Broughman! What a great choice! I cannot wait to read the Mercy's Embrace series next month and discover Admiral Patrick McGillvary for myself! ;)
Yes, it gives their story a sense of uniqueness when they create their own characters to accompany Austens!

    2. Meredith, you are too kind to mention McGillvary. Actually he is Susan Kaye's creation, appearing as Wentworth's edgier friend in her Frederick Wentworth, Captain novels. She's been kind to "lend" him to me!

I'm a big fan of Dyfed Brougham's too. I've been lobbying Pamela Aidan, on behalf of all his fans, to feature him in a series of books! :)

    3. Laura, I would *love* to see a book featuring Dyfed Brougham! Maybe we should start a petition! ;)

    4. Where do I - and 500 people who mysteriously look and sound like me - sign? :D

  3. Ack, I'm so behind in my reading! I have yet to make the acquaintance of some of these glorious gentlemen being mentioned but I definitely will.

Wonderful vlog! You picked a great excerpt. As far as other original characters go, you know I love Mary Simonsen's Antony, Lord Fitzwilliam. Also Sharon Lathan's Dr George Darcy. In her Darcy Saga I wouldn't necessarily call him a heartthrob but I have a feeling that may change when she publishes his story of his younger days.

    1. Oh, yes! I am all aboard the Lord Fitzwilliam train! I went back & forth whether to include him in my original list b/c we know "of" him from Austen but Mary really lets us know him from her books! Still wouldn't mind seeing more of him!
I am interested in Dr. George Darcy. I think it will be an entertaining read!
Though, I thought for sure you would have a say in Michael & Gabriel! ;)

    2. Lord Fitzwilliam. From start to finished, though I really LOVED Col. Buford. Great novel, Jack, and great vlog, Jakki! Oh - I've got to know more about your shirt!

    3. Angie, I had a feeling you would mention Antony! ;)
Are you talking about my shirt in the video? Not a clue. It's a hand-me-down from friend's sister, but I love it & the way it fits! ;)

  4. Of course I love Michael and Gabriel! Best archangels ever! I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Legacy. She has two chapters left to post, I think.

    1. Yes, two more and Legacy will be coming down from the forums for publication - unless I get lucky and have the kindle version up before the final chapter is posted. ;)

  6. Well, I have to promote my own character, Antony, Lord Fitzwilliam. He is such a nice contrast to Darcy's goodness. He's a bad boy and quite content to have it that way. Thanks everyone for the mention!

    1. Thanks, Mary! I think Antony would feel pretty good about himself knowing he has such a following. But he does have a way with words and women! Maybe Mr. Collins should take some flattery tips from Antony. ;)

  7. I also enjoyed Sophie and Samuelin Linda Wells Imperative, the Doctor in Lathan's and the valet in Aidan's (or was it Altman's) trilogy, and Vicar Bradley in Grace's trilogy, and little Ben in Dixon's HTMTH - loved what she did with Ben and Darcy!

  8. You've done it again, Jakki! Now, I must add Colonel Buford to my list of dashing heroes I'd like to read about. Of course, I am so happy to see little Ben's name mentioned above. :~) Thanks, GranJan!
